Venice, the Dolomites & Lake Garda — The Perfect Northern Italy Combination
I just returned from a scouting trip through Venice, the Dolomites, and Lake Garda, where I spent the past week visiting and evaluating some of the region’s best hotels firsthand. From newly opened properties in Venice to intimate alpine retreats and lakeside hideaways along Garda, the goal was simple: find the hotels truly worth recommending to clients.
What makes this itinerary so special is how seamlessly these destinations pair together. In just over a week, you move from Venice’s romantic canals and historic palazzos, to the dramatic peaks and wellness-focused retreats of the Dolomites, ending with a serene lakeside escape before heading home. It’s one of those rare combinations that feels incredibly varied without ever being logistically difficult.
The pacing is also part of the appeal — a few nights immersed in Venice’s energy and history, followed by fresh mountain air and slower mornings in the Dolomites, then a final reset along Lake Garda before departing from Milan or Venice. It’s ideal for couples, honeymooners, or anyone looking for a balance of culture, scenery, food, and relaxation.
Check out my high-level itinerary below!
Venice - 4 Nights
Start in Venice for a few days of wandering quiet canals, aperitivo stops, hidden courtyards, and long dinners along the water. Staying directly in Venice proper makes a huge difference in experiencing the city once the daytime crowds fade.
Hotel Highlights
Dolomites - 3 Nights
From Venice, it’s an incredibly scenic train ride into the Dolomites (roughly 3–4 hours depending on your base). This portion of the trip shifts entirely into wellness, nature, and mountain scenery — think spa afternoons, hiking, alpine lakes, and dramatic panoramic views.
Hotel Highlights
Lake Garda - 2 Nights
Break up the journey south with a stop along Lake Garda for a slower lakeside finish. Whether staying in Sirmione, Gardone Riviera, or Riva del Garda, it’s the perfect contrast to both Venice and the mountains — relaxed, elegant, and incredibly scenic.

It’s one of my favorite Northern Italy routes because every stop feels completely distinct while still flowing naturally together — romantic city, dramatic mountains, and peaceful lakeside living all in one trip.
